Timezones: A reminder not everyone is awake at the same time as you.

I’m logged into the IRC chat and Skype 24/7. More often than not if I have to be away for a few days my machine will still be running, logging everything (I’m an information addict and loath missing out on stuff).

When I wake up in the mornings, first thing I do is check the scroll back for any cool links I may have missed, or to see what someones day has been like, or if they had questions no one was around to answer at the time.

What I do find is that people sometimes forget that ToySoldiersUnite is global. All around the world. Ok, maybe people don’t forget that, but what they DO forget, is that the world has timezones. If it’s 8am in the UK, it’s 9am in The Netherlands, it’s 4am on the East Coast, and in Sydney it’s 6pm.

Why is this important? Because we have lives. We have meatspace to contend with which gets in the way of our lives in Cyberspace. So when you’re trying to contact someone, please, please, please remember, they’re operating at a completely different time of day. They’ll have just woken up and may only be able to give 1 word replies until they’ve caffeinated themselves, or it’s evening and they have to wrestle a small unwilling human being to bed.

Or it’s 4am in the morning and they’re sleeping. This works both ways of course.

Add to this that Toy Soldiers and a significant amount of internet citizens do NOT conform to meatspace’s regularly scheduled hours, and probably sleep during the day in their timezone, and are most active in the evening or late night.

What’s the point of all of this? Nothing much really than a friendly reminder that we all have lives, and just because when you log into the chat or skype or anywhere else, and find no one is replying to you, they’re probably asleep/working/eating/playing. Not dead, ignoring you, or given up.

On that note I will say this. Australians. I’m sorry, but you guys seem to have the short end of the stick. Aussie Toy Soldiers always seem to log in to chat just after everyone has signed off, or before everyone signs back in.

      Sergeant Dutch. Awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayy…….

      Yah, is cool.

I keep logging in just to see if anyone’s on.

Maybe Sgt. Dutch infected us with some parasitic monster called Life for science? He tends to do random stuff like that…

I already have a team of scientists researching this topic.

      I want fries!
      And a team of scientists!

      Man, I’m missing out.

    • From now on I am now going to use the term “meatspace” any time I’m referring to events outside the Internet.
