Currently the only method of going to space is sitting on top of a huge amount of fuel, fire it up, and hope it won’t explode while launching you up into space on a large fireball. Very spectacular indeed!
Now this rocket fuel can be solid, or liquid state.
A tutorial for making your own solid rocket fuel can be seen in this video:
Please discuss any other [maybe overlooked] fuel sources that could get us up into space!
Gizmodo has some how-to’s as well.
We did something similar at the lab! (We used a Milkyway candybar, because it’s got space in the name.)
I’m pretty sure it’s in the book “Absinthe and Flamethrowers” where they go into how you make your own homemade rockets using KNO3 and sorbitol (C6H14O6) (amongst other things). There are some other pretty awesome (and only mildly illegal) concoctions used by amateur rocket folks, where they also talk about the safety aspect (one brilliant amateur rocketry engine maker blew his entire house to smithereens accidentally one day. No one knows how, because there was nothing of him left to ask).
Bill Gurstelle is the author for “Absinthe” as well as “Notes from the Technology Underground”, from where the anecdote about amateur rocketry comes.
