MCM Expo May ’13: Revenge of the Robots!

    • Sgt. Dutch
      Participant

      Date: 24th, 25th, 26th of May 2013

Location: MCM Expo, Excel London, Royal Victoria Dock, London, E16 1XL. Map Here

      Times: Friday 24th, 14.00 – 19.00
                Saturday 25th, 09.00 – 18.00
                Sunday 26th, 10.00 – 17.00

      HOSTEL NOTICE
Iron has finished doing the hostel booking. If you still need a place to crash, you’ll have to book the hostel by yourself. Rough guestimate of cost will be £70 for friday, saturday and sunday night.

Right, it’s that time again to start our planning for probably the best invasion in Europe, MCM Expo. For those who are new, we’ll explain.
Every 6 months, the Movie Comics & Media Expo happens in London. Toy Soldiers from all over the UK, and even farther afield descend upon London to invade the biggest Con this side of the planet. It is Europes answer to San Diego Comic Con (the biggest one of all). Last October, roughly 70,000 people visited.

During this time, Toy Soldiers invade for all three days, spreading propaganda, dressing up in both cosplay and their own Toy Soldier uniforms, gawking at the amazing costumes, mucking about on the grass fields outside the building, the occasional alcoholic beverage for those of age, and much more.

Every Expo, we’ve also have our own table in the dealers/exhibitors area. It has been booked and paid for, however if you’d like to make a donation towards the cost of the table (£180) please send it via paypal to ‘toysoldiersunite@gmail.com’ and mark it ‘MCM Expo’. The table will be at the far end of the Expo, near the exit. We’re not EXACTLY sure where, mainly because Expo is keeping that end of the hall flexible in case they sell out of tables and need to get another hall.

The second part of our regular invasion, is of course the Hostel, which has become our adopted base of operations for nearly every event in London. St. Christophers Village in London Bridge is the place where we recharge our batteries before galavanting back into the fray. Bar, basement area, music, bunk beds, showers, wifi, etc. etc. etc.

So, few things we need to get done first.

      • Book and pay for the table <- DONE
      • Book and pay for hostel <- DONE
      • Plan some shenanigans <- March, dance, missions, photo's, challenges, prizes, whatever, ANYTHING!

    • Commander Radar
      Participant

Probably going to make it, just need to smooth over some details.

    • Sgt. Dutch
      Participant

Just thought I’d give everyone 2 updates:

1: I’m going to bring a tablet with me for the table. The tablet will serve 2 purposes, one it’ll be displaying in a loop some new propaganda videos I’m working on. Secondly, for the three days of the expo I’m turning off the email activation process. This means using the tablet we can sign people up on the spot!

2: Working on the assumption we wont have the usual large boxes that stand on our table, I’m going to bring a rolling workshop type trolley with demountable boxes. Wont be as big as those two boxes, but they’ll be appropriately decorated and suited to the job.

Finally. Who’s volunteering to sort out the hostel? I’ve got the expo table and such handled, however the hostel is vitally important (mainly for drinkies and sleepies).

    • Commander Radar
      Participant

Ok, I am now a go-go. Put me down for the hostel.

    • Sgt. Dutch
      Participant

Well, due to lack of interest (from a group outside of TSU), there wont be a hackspace as I’ve spoken to several you about. This was going to let us get our table for free, but that’s alright, as there was always a back up plan.

This means we can finally book the table with certainty, and get the ball rolling.
So you know, patches & pins WILL be on sale, as well as the new wristbands, and perhaps some other things.

And I’ll be contacting everyone individually about the hostel soon.

    • Corporal Tink
      Participant

If you want i can make a big box of cookies to go on the table … You can give them out to people who sign up/ buy stuff/ are interested ?

    • Sgt. Dutch
      Participant

Sounds like a plan, Tink. I’ll bring a few unfolded boxes as well, so we go around and take pictures with people holding them. XD

      GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!

The table has now been booked and paid for. We will be located at AF14, which is roughly near the far end/exit end again.

Sniper and myself will be setting up friday morning. If you want to make an early donation towards the cost of the table (£180), please send it to the TSU paypal account ‘toysoldiersunite@gmail.com’ and mark it “Paying for services rendered by Dutch.” or just “MCM Expo” in case you don’t want to feel too dirty.

    • Raptor

      Bed. I need one.

    • Lieutenant JDUK

      Participant

Oh hey, I’m coming! But I won’t be staying at the hostel.

… lol jk I totally am. Book me in!

    • Pvt Morglum
      Participant

who is up for doing a tsu harlem shake at the expo?

    • Professor Oplastik
      Participant

I’m already attending in like 51 Harlem Shakes but I second that idea. If we make it funny enough, it could be a great propaganda.

    • Captain Dermut
      Participant

      Harlem Shakes?

OK, I admit I had no clue what this was, so I did some research… And I must admit I still don’t have a clue what this is all about. In fact, I might actually be even more profoundly clueless that before I started.

It might be because I am a grumpy old FOSSL who just doesn’t get what you young folks are up to, separated by the miles wide age gap as we are, but as far as I understand it, and correct me if I am wrong, this is it:

      1) The name is derived from the band who made the original music.

      2) The dance seems to be dry humping empty air, pretending to have an epileptic fit or just behaving like a complete moron who just happens to be on some serious drug bender while occasionally getting electrocuted. In case of the first two options, I must admit I find this somewhat distasteful. In case of the last I think this is quite *redacted due to inappropriate language*.

At least I got planking and flash mobbing as being exercises in introducing some Surrealism in peoples life (which I wholeheartedly endorse).

So… I clearly don’t get it. Explain please. I wish to learn.

I like to reiterate this is in no way an attempt to stymie your fun, guys, It is just that this is one of those phenomenon that goes completely over my head. If you think it is fun, go for it, you have my blessing. I just wish to understand it. Which I clearly don’t.

      Please help.

    • Sgt. Dutch
      Participant

It’s…. a meme. I suppose you could call it that. Rather like the Gangam Style videos. One guy does weird dance (not just dry humping) followed by bizarre dancing. I honestly don’t get where it comes from either, save for that first video of an army squad doing it.

    • Pvt Morglum
      Participant

      pretty simple really.

step 1. get a group of people together, any size, more the better.

step 2. someone does a little dance, preferably something low key while everyone else ignores them.

step 3. everyone goes weird/mad/crazy. this can of course mean loads of things. people can flap around like a bird. bang their head against the floor. run around in circles with just their pants on. ideas are infinite really.

funniest one i have seen is a group of soldiers from norway on parade. when it goes mad there are a pair in sleeping bags worming around haha.

    • Captain Dermut
      Participant

So… it’s an social commentary on the infectiousness of Weird memes? A meme about memes?

That doesn’t just make sense it’s… brilliant!

Still don’t get the attraction, though. Guess I’m just getting old, but at least Now I understand it a bit better.

    • Sgt. Pinkerton
      Participant

I wish this meme was really as deep as you suggest

    • Pvt Morglum
      Participant

tis a bit of fun is all….

    • Geoff Nicholson
      Participant

It all sounds meta to me.

But flashmobs are all about getting a bunch of people together in normal places to do strange things.

    • Pvt Morglum
      Participant

      attention all soldiers.

i think we should organise a march, through the expo centre and stalls, shouting, proclaiming, waving and chanting as much propaganda and rasing as much attention as possible,

how does 3pm on saturday sound?

i know getting toy soldiers in one place at one time for one thing is like trying to catch dark matter with your teeth, but i think it would be a good way of getting the army some attention and, of course, be a laff.

which is what its all about initt!

plus, we all look for good in our uniforms dont we?

    • Brigadier Davis
      Participant

      TOY SOLIDIERS!

You want a Somewhere to stay for Expo! You tell me!

You want a nice warm place to rest your head for Expo! You tell me!

You want good drinks and good eats for Expo! You tell me

You want somewhere to wash that Expo nerd smell off You? You tell me!

Book your hostel room today With Iron Industries!

      Seriously book the damn things

    • YJ Grimm
      Participant

As to the marching, its always a good idea but it means people get left behind at the table. However, marching is fun ^_^

    • Pvt Morglum
      Participant

im happy to guard the desk if it means others can go march

    • Raptor

Flight and hotel booked. Now add me to the list!

      :P

    • Brigadier Davis
      Participant

Well then, Ive got 10 for the hostel room, including our late added Commander Radar so how many others do we have comming?

    • Sgt. Dutch
      Participant

Iron has sorted the hostel. Anyone still wanting to crash at St. Christophers with the rest of us will have to book their own bed at this point.

Also, still would appreciate donations towards the table. You can send it over paypal to toysoldiersunite@gmail.com although I know some of you will be donating in cash at the Expo. If you are, let me know. Though paypal is prefered.

Now. Shenanigans. One thing I’ve got in mind is interviewing internet personalities, such as Zee Captain/Alexius Vitaly of Romantically Apocalyptic, and Tomska of the ASDF and Tomska fame. Perhaps Humon as well of Scandinavia & The World.

Why? A) because these are awesome people doing what they love and 2) because it makes gets the Army noticed.

    • Sgt. Dutch
      Participant

Courtesy of Chrysalice’s constant vigilance on all the sites I don’t keep an eye on, I think we’ve found the one thing we definitely have to do at the MCM Expo.
      http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/if-this-is-what-the-japanese-harlem-shake-looks-like-america

      HADOUKEN!

Why? Because Harlem Shake is ebbing and Opa Gangnam Style is done to death. This one looks like it’ll be one that’ll pick up speed in popularity, and it’d be great if the Toy Soldiers are at the forefront of this. And we’ll do a video of it. And we’ll add special effects onto it.

    • Commander Radar
      Participant

I am loving this, but they’re all jumping towards her to get that shot, a video would have to be done in reverse.

    • Brigadier Davis
      Participant

Well in that case if the weather is nice, we can use the Grass outside of the Excel centre, it should certainly help to cushion some of the impact of landing.

Im guessing Dutch has already thought of this, but….Dutch in the middle hitting the floor with his Ban Hammer?

    • Sgt. Dutch
      Participant

Funny. I was actually thinking of making myself a new banhammer. Bigger. Oversized so to speak.

    • Evelfa

      I have a shenanigan idea!

We played this when I went to Scotland with my Officer Training Corp bunch and it was pretty good,

      A murder game!

3 hats, each with pieces of paper inside

1st hat: Names of everyone in attendance (each on a separate piece of paper)

2nd hat: Names of murder weapons! (Not the actual weapons, you will need to procure those yourselves)

3rd hat: The location and/or time that you need to kill that person

After you have killed your contract you will take over their contract, this carries on until only one person is left alive!
You need to have a witness to your murder for obvious reasons, the witness can be the person you murdered but you may need someone else if you think they might be a douche about it :P

An example could be: “Iron, Kiplings camera, underneath the expo table” or “Raptor, Lieutenant JDUKs robot head, between 2 – 3am”

When I played it with my corp we had some really over the top stuff, like one guy had to be killed in a toilet cubicle with a kayak.  Another was in the Loch with a loaf of bread.  Some of them we had to team up to do, but be careful who you tell as they may be more loyal to the one you have to murder than to you… You may have to bribe them!

We also had to borrow random stuff from random people for the night, like I had to borrow the a wrist watch off one of the Majors so that I could kill a contract up the mountain that I climbed the next day!  Or my murderer had to kill me with an orientation marker, so he had to wait until the last day when they’d all been brought down from the hills!

      Anyway, what do you think?
I’ll write everything up so all you guys need to do is come up with inventive ways to kill each other!

    • Lt. Sophie
      Keymaster

      Sounds great :D

      Good news everyone.

The Dealer Pack for the table has arrived. We are located at AF14, which is nice, since it’s one of those tables that keeps getting shifted around on the map till the last minute. Let’s just assume we’ll be near the far end/exit as usual.

This is what I’ll be bringing for the table:

      1. 500 to 1000 Manifesto’s (thanks to a laserjet that landed in my lap)
      2. All the TSU Shop merchandise (patches, pins, wristbands)
      3. A whole army of 3D printer Toy Soldiers (they’ll be in the TSU shop soon as well)
      4. Robot Arm
      5. Robot #4747’s head
      6. Tinker’s latest creations, the regiment standee’s
      7. Table cloth
      8. Ammo crate (or 2) which will be replacing the old boxes
      9. Tablet with backup battery supply, which will have ALL of the latest Soldier videos playing.
      10. Also, sheets of Toy Soldier Timmy and Robot #4646 cubee’s.
      11. And probably some miscellanous propaganda.

Am I forgetting anything? What’s everyone else bringing?

And one more thing. Until we know what kind of space we have behind the table, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR COATS AND BAGS BEHIND IT!!! I nearly tripped up last time, nearly knocking over the partition wall behind us. There is a cloak room downstairs so USE IT!
